Reformer Vs Tower Pilates: Which Is Better For Your Fitness Goals?
We are absolutely thrilled to have you here! Whether you are a long-time movement lover or someone just beginning to explore the world of Pilates, we know how exciting, and sometimes a little overwhelming, it can be to choose the right class. At Meraki Studios, we’re all about making you feel right at home, and that starts with helping you find the workout that makes you feel your most vibrant, strong, and confident self.
In our beautiful Banstead studio, we offer both Reformer and Tower Pilates. Both are incredible tools for building strength, improving posture, and boosting your mental wellbeing, but they offer slightly different experiences. If you’ve been wondering which one is the "better" fit for your unique goals, you are in the right place! Let’s dive into the details so you can walk into your next session feeling empowered and ready to glow.
What makes the Reformer so special?
The Pilates Reformer is often the first thing people think of when they hear "equipment Pilates," and for good reason! It’s a versatile, dynamic machine that uses a sliding carriage, springs, and pulleys to create resistance.
When you step onto a Reformer, you’ll immediately notice the flow. Because the carriage moves, your body is constantly working to find balance and stability. This creates a workout that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. At Meraki Studios, we love the Reformer for its ability to target every single muscle group while keeping things low-impact and gentle on your joints.
Why you’ll love the Reformer:
The "Full-Body" Feel: The Reformer is famous for its ability to work your entire body in a single session. From your core and glutes to your arms and shoulders, nothing is left behind!
Dynamic Resistance: The springs provide resistance as you push away and assistance as you return, helping you build long, lean muscles.
Core Challenge: Because the carriage is constantly moving, your deep core muscles have to stay "switched on" to keep you stable.
Endless Variety: There are hundreds of exercises we can do on the Reformer, meaning you’ll never get bored and your body will always be gently challenged in new ways!!
If you’re a beginner, please don't let the "machine" aspect intimidate you. Our expert instructors provide personalised guidance in every class, ensuring you feel safe and supported from the moment you sit down on the carriage. You can see our setup in action on our gallery page.
Elevate your practice with the Tower
While the Reformer is all about movement and flow, the Tower Pilates unit offers a more grounded and focused experience. The Tower is a vertical frame attached to a stable mat. Instead of a moving carriage, you work with various springs, bars, and loops that are attached directly to the Tower.
We often describe the Tower as the perfect place to find your foundation. Because you are working on a stable platform, you can really focus on the precision of your movements and the alignment of your body. It is an exceptional tool for anyone looking to improve their flexibility or recover from a minor injury, as it allows for very controlled, isolated work.
Why you’ll love the Tower:
Spinal Mobility: The "Push-Through Bar" on the Tower is a game-changer for your spine. It helps you find a deep, delicious stretch that feels absolutely amazing after a long day of sitting at a desk.
Targeted Strength: The Tower allows us to isolate specific muscle groups more easily than the Reformer. If you want to focus on hip stability or shoulder mobility, the Tower is your best friend.
Deep Stretching: The vertical springs allow for a range of stretches that simply aren't possible on other equipment. You’ll leave feeling inches taller!
A Gentle Introduction: For some, the stationary nature of the Tower feels a little more "grounded" than the moving Reformer, making it a wonderful choice if you’re feeling a bit nervous about your first time!!
Reformer vs. Tower: A side-by-side comparison
To help you decide which path to take, we’ve put together this simple guide. Remember, at Meraki Studios, we often encourage our clients to try both! Mixing up your routine is one of the best ways to keep your body guessing and your mind engaged.
Which path should you choose?
Your fitness journey is entirely personal, and we are here to support you every step of the way. When deciding between Reformer and Tower, think about how you want to feel when you walk out of the studio doors.
Choose Reformer if...
You want a workout that feels continuous and dynamic. If you love the feeling of your heart rate gently rising and you want to focus on "toning and lengthening" through movement, the Reformer is a perfect match. It’s also great for those who enjoy a bit of a coordination challenge!
Choose Tower if...
You want to slow things down and focus on the "nitty-gritty" of your alignment. If you suffer from a stiff back, tight hamstrings, or just want to feel more "connected" to your core, the Tower will give you the space and stability to do just that. It’s also an excellent choice for our Forever Fit clients who value extra stability.
Try Both if...
You want the best of both worlds! Many of our clients at Meraki Studios alternate between the two. One day you might want the flow of the Reformer, and the next, you might need the deep, restorative stretches of the Tower. We are so proud to offer both in our Banstead home!!
Why the Meraki community is different
We know that walking into a new studio can be a big step. That’s why we’ve built Meraki Studios to be a place where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their age, ability, or fitness background. Whether you are a fitness beginner or an advanced practitioner, you are a vital part of our fitness family.
Our secret sauce? Small class sizes. By keeping our groups small, our expert instructors can give you the personalized attention you deserve. We don't believe in "one size fits all" fitness. Instead, we tailor every workout to ensure you are moving safely and effectively. We address any anxieties you might have by offering gentle introductions and clear, step-by-step guidance. You’re never just a face in the crowd here; you’re a friend we’re excited to see!
Your first visit: The logistics
We want your first visit to be as stress-free as possible! Here is everything you need to know before you arrive at our Banstead studio:
Arrival Time: Please try to arrive about 10 minutes before your class starts. This gives us time to show you around, introduce you to the equipment, and help you get settled.
What to Wear: Comfortable leggings or shorts and a form-fitting top work best. We also require "grip socks" for safety on the machines: if you don't have any, we usually have them available for purchase in the studio!
Parking: There is convenient parking located nearby, making it easy for you to hop in and out for your session.
Water: Stay hydrated! We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle, though we have facilities to top you up if needed.
Booking: If you're a newcomer, check out our First Timers page for special introductory offers designed just for you!!
